An auto repair shop winning the warning-light call
An example plan for an independent auto repair shop that wants to be the shop drivers find and reach first when a light comes on or the brakes start to squeal.
The situation
Imagine an independent shop with an owner who spends half the day at the counter and half under a car. Two technicians, a part-time service writer, a full schedule most weeks. The work is good, and most customers who come once come back.
But the new customers are the problem. A driver whose check engine light just came on does not ask a neighbour. They pick up a phone and search "auto repair near me" or "check engine light". They look at the first few shops Google shows, compare the stars and call whoever picks up or seems easiest to ask. When the shop is in a bay with the radio on, the phone rings out, and that driver has already called the next name.
The shop's website was built years ago. It has a phone number, a photo of the building and a short list of services in one paragraph. The Google profile has the right category but few photos and no list of services. Nobody asks customers for reviews unless they remember.
What's getting in the way
- A missed call is a lost job. A driver with a problem usually wants an answer now, and a ringing phone in a bay goes unanswered.
- No clear list of what the shop does. Brakes, tires, diagnostics and air conditioning are all in one paragraph, so a search for one of them has no page to land on.
- The next step is a phone call. Many drivers would rather describe the problem and ask for a time in writing, but there is nowhere to do it.
- Few reviews, and no steady way to get more. Drivers trust other drivers, and a shop with a handful of old reviews looks like a risk.
- Nothing brings customers back. The next oil change or tire swap goes to whoever the customer happens to search for next time.
The plan
Week 1: Fix the basics a driver sees first
Zome starts with the Google Business Profile and the website's front page:
- The profile lists the shop's real hours, phone number, service area and every service it actually offers, with the right primary category.
- The owner adds real photos: the shop front, the bays, the team, a few finished jobs. No stock photos of other shops.
- The front page leads with what a driver needs: the phone number, the hours, the services and a button to ask for a time.
The owner also decides what the shop will and will not say yes to. A shop that does not work on diesels or big trucks says so clearly, which saves everyone a wasted call.
Weeks 2 to 4: Give every common problem a page and a way to ask
Zome builds the pieces a driver needs in order to choose the shop:
- A page for each main service on the website: brakes, oil changes, tires and alignment, diagnostics and the check engine light, batteries, suspension. Each one explains what the work involves, what the driver should tell the shop and what happens after they ask for a time. No promised prices or turnaround; the shop sets those.
- A request form that asks for the car, the service or symptom, and a preferred time window. The shop confirms each request itself, so a customer is never told a time that nobody has agreed to.
- A text back for missed calls. When the phone goes unanswered, the caller gets a short text from the shop's number with a link to ask for a time, and the shop sees it in the lead inbox. It is a first reply, not a promise that someone is on the way.
- Local pages for the nearby towns and neighbourhoods the shop really serves, built from the shop's own details through local SEO.
Months 2 and 3: Earn the trust that picks the shop
- After each finished job, the customer gets a short, fair review request with a direct link to the shop's Google profile. Everyone eligible is asked the same way, and Zome does not filter out the unhappy ones.
- The owner reads every review, thanks the customer and learns from the critical ones. A calm, specific reply to a bad review often does more than a good one.
- Repair photos that customers have agreed to share, with the car and the problem described in plain words, become a short gallery. Faces and licence plates stay out of every photo.
Each month the owner looks at the calls, the missed calls that were texted back, the requests that turned into visits and the new reviews. If a service page is getting questions but few requests, the page gets a clearer description or a better photo.
What Zome does and what you do
| Task | Zome | You |
|---|---|---|
| Google profile | Drafts the services, description and categories | Confirm the details and add real photos |
| Service pages | Writes and builds them from your list | Say what you do, and what you do not |
| Request form | Builds the form and routes each request to your inbox | Confirm the day and time with the customer |
| Missed-call text back | Sends the first text and logs the lead | Call back, and keep the hours up to date |
| Reviews | Sends fair requests after finished jobs | Read, thank and answer every review |
| Local pages | Builds them from the places you serve | Tell us which areas you really cover |
What to track
- Calls and requests. The simplest sign that more drivers can reach you.
- Missed calls that became a request. Shows whether the text back is catching jobs the phone would have lost.
- Requests that became visits. Shows whether the form asks the right questions and the replies are fast enough.
- New reviews and the star rating. The slow, honest measure of trust.
- Where new customers say they found you. Ask at the counter and write it down.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Promising what you cannot confirm. A time, a price or a same-day fix on a web page is a promise. Let the shop confirm each one.
- Stock photos of someone else's shop. Drivers can tell, and it undercuts every other thing on the page.
- Asking only the happy customers for reviews. Ask everyone the same way, or the reviews stop meaning anything.
- Letting requests sit. A form is only useful when someone reads it and replies the same day it arrives.
