When you're on a ladder or under a sink, you can't answer the phone. Answering services cover those calls. The newer ones use AI instead of people, and they're priced in very different ways, so a headline price tells you little until you count your own calls.

Four ways AI answering is priced

  • Per call: Smith.ai
  • Per minute: Rosie, Sameday and Ruby's human receptionists
  • Per unique caller: Goodcall
  • Per conversation: Jobber Receptionist

Before you compare, pull a month of call logs. You need the number of calls you miss, the number of different people calling, and the average call length.

What each one does

What you get differs as much as the price.

  • Smith.ai AI Receptionist: month-to-month with "no long-term contracts." Smith.ai asks for 30 days' notice to cancel.
  • Rosie Professional: answers 24/7, takes messages and texts appointment links.
  • Rosie Scale and Growth:
  • Scale adds booking straight into your calendar, plus warm and live transfers.
  • Growth adds custom training and white-glove onboarding.
  • Rosie offers a 7-day free trial and you can "cancel anytime."
  • Goodcall: unlimited minutes. You pay by the number of different people who call. Billing yearly saves 15%.
  • Sameday:
  • built for trades;
  • connects to pro scheduling tools such as ServiceTitan;
  • includes unlimited users;
  • doesn't state contract terms on its pricing page.
  • Jobber Receptionist:
  • answers calls and texts, answers questions and creates requests;
  • books, cancels and reschedules appointments in Jobber;
  • needs a Jobber dedicated phone number.

People instead of AI

Ruby uses live human receptionists:

PlanMinutesMonthly
Starter50$250
Basic100$395
Standard200$720
Professional500$1,725

Ruby says there are no fees for activation, onboarding or setup. People handle unusual calls better, but they cost more per minute.

Work out your own number

Say you miss 120 calls a month, they come from about 100 different people, and the average call lasts 2 minutes:

ServicePlan that covers itMonthly cost
Smith.ai AIPro (75 calls) plus 45 more calls at the plan's overage ratefrom $150, plus overage
RosieProfessional (250 minutes covers 240)$49
GoodcallStarter (100 unique callers)$79
SamedayLaunch (500 minutes)$449
Jobber Receptionist30 conversations + 90 × $0.79, plus your Jobber plan$100.10 + plan

The cheapest plan isn't always the best value. Check what happens on the call itself:

  • Does it book, or only take a message?
  • Can it transfer an emergency to you?
  • Does the customer get a text afterwards?
  • Do you get a summary you can act on fast?

Questions to ask any vendor

  1. What happens when the call is an emergency? Can it reach you right away?
  2. Does it book into your calendar, or send a request you confirm?
  3. What does a caller hear if the AI can't answer?
  4. Do you get the recording, a transcript or only a summary?
  5. What's the overage rate, and can you set a cap?
  6. Do you keep your phone number, or forward calls to a new one?

Where Zome fits

Zome's Growth plan includes an AI receptionist on your Zome number, with 300 minutes a month. Done-for-you includes 600.

  • It answers when you can't, takes the caller's details and requests a visit window for you to confirm.
  • It doesn't promise arrival times, and the only prices it gives are the ones on your website.
  • Missed-call text-back and two-way texting are included.

Growth is $299 a month, or $249 billed yearly, with no setup fee and no contract. It also includes your website, Google presence, reviews, booking and follow-ups. See Zome pricing, or get a free report on your online presence.
