Google Search Console is a free Google service that shows how Google sees your website. To use it, Google asks you to prove you own the site. One way is a small tag on the page.
Get the tag from Google
- Go to Google Search Console and add your website's address as a property.
- Choose the HTML tag verification method.
- Copy the tag. It looks like
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="..." />.
Add it to Zome
- Go to Website and open the Domain tab.
- Find Google Search Console.
- Paste the tag into Google verification tag.
- Press Save. The badge shows Tag added.
- Publish your website if you haven't, then press Verify in Search Console.
Bing verification tag (optional) works the same way for Bing Webmaster Tools.
What it's for
Search Console shows search words that brought people to your site and any problems Google found. It doesn't improve your ranking by itself. The Search Console row on Rank on Google on Home shows Yes once the tag is added.
Use the domain you actually publish on. If you connect your own domain later, add it as a property in Search Console too.
