You add the DNS records at the company that runs your domain's DNS. That is often the same company you bought the domain from (the registrar), but not always.
Start with your email
Search your inbox for the words "domain", "renewal" or "receipt". A yearly renewal receipt names the company and the domain.
Use a public lookup
- Open ICANN's lookup tool at lookup.icann.org.
- Type your domain, like harborplumbing.com, and search.
- Read the Registrar line. It names the company that holds the domain.
- Read the Name servers lines. They name the company that runs the DNS.
Some owners hide their details behind a privacy service. The registrar and the name servers still show.
Registrar or name servers: which one wins?
The records go where the name servers point. If your domain is registered at one company but uses another company's name servers, add the records at the second company.
Name servers often give the company away:
| If the name servers contain | The DNS is probably at |
|---|---|
| domaincontrol.com | GoDaddy |
| registrar-servers.com | Namecheap |
| cloudflare.com | Cloudflare |
| wixdns.net | Wix |
| worldnic.com | Network Solutions |
| bluehost.com | Bluehost |
| hover.com | Hover |
