Not open yet: Zome is not selling or moving domains yet. This page explains how it will work, so you can decide ahead of time. Until it opens, keep your domain where it is and connect it: see Connect your own domain.
You can buy your website's address inside Zome instead of at another company. The domain is registered in your name, connected to your website for you, and renewed once a year on your card.
Before you start
- You need a paid plan or a trial. Only the account owner can buy a domain.
- Your website works at its free Zome address meanwhile, and keeps working after you buy.
Buy it
- Go to Website and open the Publish and domain tab.
- Under Buy a new domain, type the name you want, like harborplumbing.
- Zome shows your name with the endings it sells, such as .com, .net and .org, and some ideas built from your business name, town and trade.
- Pick one. Check the price, fill in the owner details the registry asks for (name, address, phone and email) and pay on the secure payment page.
The details you give are those of the domain's legal owner. Use your own name or your business's, and a phone number and email address you will keep. The registry sends its confirmation message to that email address.
What you pay
Every name shows two prices side by side: the first year and what it costs each year after. Look at both. Some endings are cheap the first year and cost much more to renew, and the page says so when a renewal is higher.
Prices are in US dollars (US$), even if your plan is in Canadian dollars. Your card company may convert them at its own rate.
If the price changes while you are looking, Zome shows you the new price and charges nothing until you agree to it.
What is included
- The secure lock (HTTPS), at no extra cost.
- Zome connects the domain to your website and sets the records. There is nothing for you to add.
- You can move the domain to another company whenever you like, for free. See Move your domain out of Zome.
What happens after you pay
- Zome registers the domain with the registry. This usually takes a few minutes.
- Confirm your email within 15 days. The registry emails the contact address you gave, with a link to confirm the domain is really yours. Open it and click the link. If nobody does within 15 days, the domain is suspended. This is a rule for every domain, at every company. Check your spam folder if it does not arrive.
- Zome connects the domain to your website and turns on the lock, then emails you when it is live. Your website works at the domain while you wait for the confirmation, but do not forget the email.
Follow the progress on the Publish and domain tab.
Renewal
The card you paid with is kept for the yearly renewal. Zome emails you 30 days before it renews, and you can turn renewal off on the domain's card under Yearly renewal. See Renewals, reminders and what they cost.
If it does not work
If the name is taken by someone else just before Zome can register it, or the price moved, Zome does not register it and refunds you in full. If the registry has trouble and Zome still cannot register it after a day of trying, Zome refunds you too. A refund can take 5 to 10 days to show on your statement. You can then search for another name.
Names Zome cannot sell
- Names that are already taken.
- Premium names, whose owners set their own price.
- Endings Zome does not sell yet. If you want one of those, buy it where it is sold and connect it: see Connect your own domain.
- A .ca domain needs a Canadian connection, and Zome asks what yours is: a citizen, a permanent resident or a business registered in Canada, for example.
Email at the new domain
Zome connects your website, not email. A new domain starts with no email. If you want addresses like office@harborplumbing.com, set them up with an email provider. See Keep your email working when you move your website.
